NHS GGC South Glasgow hospital - Glasgow

Construction is currently underway of the NHSGGC new South Glasgow Adult Hospital which will see the £800 million project bring the highest standards of health care to Scotland.

The bespoke building will deliver 1109 patient beds with each ward consisting of 28 individual rooms with en-suite facilities. It is estimated that over 110,000 patients will pass through its doors each year.

Due for completion in 2015 it will be home to one of the largest emergency departments in Scotland and is currently the largest design and construction project in the country. As a modular building project, the contractor, MEP Solutions Ltd needed a commercially viable plumbing solution that offered high level quality and ensured future maintenance was kept to a minimum.

The purpose of the modules is to maximise the space allocation within the areas of pipe work and MEP Solutions Ltd chose our products due to the whole life value for money they provide and the company's offering of a total system solution covering fittings and controls.

The VSH XPress piping system, including XPress Carbon and XPress Stainless Steel, was chosen because of the advantages it offers over other systems such as increased safety, no requirements for hot tooling or hot work permits, time saving and reliability.

The benefit of using VSH XPress within this type of modular engineering solution helped the installers retain control over build timescales, thereby eliminating typical problems associated with traditional construction methods. Key points to the construction of these modules for the NHSGGC were the advantages of a clean environment during build, plus the ability to perform vital tests off site providing a highly efficient system to be easily connected on-site.

The 2,100 individual pre-fabricated modules are on average six metres in length and encompass the majority of services pipework required by the hospital.
